Whether you’re a novice or an experienced coxswain, it’s always good to have a refresher right before spring season is in full gear! Led by former high school and collegiate coxswains Alyssa Reed and Anne Turner.
Join us as we spend time educating new coxswains on everything about the role. From equipment and how to use it, all the way down to culture and competitive racing. Don’t know the rules of the river? Well, we’ll touch base on that as well.
And for you veteran coxswains, we’d love to have you stop by as well for round-table discussions. It never hurts to have more experienced coxswains gathering to discuss technique and share perspectives and stories.
We’ll be presenting with supplemental materials including handouts and video review. Be sure to bring pens/highlighters, notebooks, water bottle, snacks, and workout clothes. And best of all: be prepared to row.
What is a coxswain?
The coxswain (cox) is a key part of the boat. A coxswain steers the boat and encourages the rowers. In a practice situation, the coxswain is the intermediary between the coach and the rowers. In a race situation, the coxswain executes the race strategy and has the responsibility of making judgment calls to win a race.
Coxing is an excellent way for a smaller middle or high school youth to participate in a competitive sport. Coxes also need to tell their crews of larger rowers what to do, so they need to be capable of developing into confident, mature, and assertive leaders.
